The Hurricanes 2026 season is without comparison in the history of Super Rugby Pacific, but then Super Rugby Pacific is not Super Rugby. Laud their season, but to suggest this is the greatest Super Rugby team is to deny there was a tournament history pre Covid.

The Blues of 1996 and 1997, the Brumbies of Larkham and Gregan, the Crusaders under Robbie Deans, the Bulls of Matfield, Habana, Du Preez and Morne Steyn, Dave Rennie’s Sonny Bill Williams inspired Chiefs, the Crusaders under Scott Robertson …

There have been great New Zealand Super Rugby title winners, whose travels included away matches to Argentina and South Africa. The Bulls triple winners had to deal with travel to Australia and New Zealand.

There must be context to Super Rugby pre and post South Africa and Argentina’s departure. There must be an acknowledgement that Super Rugby Pacific is an inferior competition to the original Super 12.

It makes for debate as to who is the best, but apples must be compared with apples. No team currently playing in Super Rugby Pacific can be compared to the pioneers of Super Rugby who gave the rugby world the best club competition in 1996.

The Hurricanes title-winning exploits of 2026 must be applauded and every statistic makes for remarkable reading.

But let there be perspective in who the Hurricanes played, their schedule and the fact that their furthest travel was to Australia.

In the context of Super Rugby Pacific, they have produced the greatest play-off season and a mighty league season.

They have played a brilliant brand of rugby and they have played without restriction in the play-offs. They scored 29 tries in three play-off matches. It is a sensational return.

They were magnificent in scalping the Chiefs 60-5 in the final.

They have given hope to New Zealand’s rugby public that the Hurricanes will transform the All Blacks.

That will only be answered by the end of the season.

The skill level was insane all season and during the final there were times that it was barely believable in the most demanding of wind conditions.

The Hurricanes used four wingers in 17 matches and between them they scored 43 tries. Ruben Love was a stand out at No 10, Cam Roigard is the best No 9 in New Zealand and among the elite 9s in the sport and Jordie Barrett is a world class No 12.

They have been a joy to watch and many of the individuals leading the way will be in Dave Rennie’s first All Blacks squad, named on Monday morning.

But to suggest they are the greatest is to insult those many great title winners, who backed it up year after year, against opposition that offered more granite and not as much putty.
