Is the 2018 Super Rugby season the making of Kwagga Smith the Springbok?
Kwagga Smith is a superstar for the Blitzboks and equally imposing for the Lions. Will this season’s Super Rugby be the campaign that catapults him into the Springboks for the visit of Eddie Jones’s England?
Smith was colossal for the Lions in the 2017 campaign but a moment of poor judgement in contesting a high ball saw him red carded in the first half of the Lions home final against the Crusaders. It was a significant moment that had a huge impact on the Crusaders beating the Lions and becoming the first foreign team to win a Super Rugby final in South Africa.
Smith did not make Allister Coetzee’s end of season Springbok touring squad but was picked to start for the British and Irish Barbarians against the All Blacks. The Baabaas lost but Smith was named man of the match.
He then continued to excel for the Blitzboks and now turns his attention to the Lions Super Rugby challenge.
Smith certainly is rated overseas. He is the only South African to make NZ Rugby World magazine’s Super Rugby selection.
