Loftus Versfeld has long been a daunting destination for visiting teams, and the Bulls are determined to remind Europe why when Stade Français arrive for Saturday’s Investec Champions Cup opener.

Johan Ackermann’s side enter the competition on a high after dismantling the Lions, but the challenge now is to turn that momentum into a commanding performance against French opposition and demonstrate their credentials as genuine title contenders.

Speaking on the Keo & Zels Show, both Keo and Zels backed Johan Ackermann’s side to overcome their French opponents, although they differed on the expected winning margin.

With the Bulls entering the competition on the back of an emphatic victory over the Lions, Keo believes the Pretoria side must use their opening fixture to send a warning to the rest of Europe.

“I think they have to put in a performance that says to everyone in Europe, you don’t want to come to Loftus,” Keo said.

For Keo, the challenge is about more than simply winning at home. The Bulls must demonstrate that they have developed the mentality to compete against Europe’s strongest clubs, particularly after falling short in major matches in previous seasons.

Their performances in URC finals have highlighted the difficulty of translating potential into silverware, but Keo believes the arrival of Ackermann has brought renewed confidence and purpose.

Zels agreed that the Bulls have momentum, pointing to the resurgence of Cameron Hanekom as one of the most encouraging developments.

Hanekom produced an explosive performance against the Lions, showcasing the carrying power and physicality that made him one of South Africa’s most exciting loose forwards before his lengthy injury absence.

Keo believes another strong campaign against elite European opposition could strengthen Hanekom’s Springbok prospects ahead of the Nations Championship.

However, Zels cautioned that competition for places in Rassie Erasmus’ back row remains fierce, with Jasper Wiese, Siya Kolisi and Pieter-Steph du Toit already established within the squad.

Hanekom starts at No 8 against Stade Français, alongside Marco van Staden and captain Elrigh Louw in a formidable loose trio.

The Bulls will also welcome the experience of Handré Pollard at flyhalf, with Paul de Wet partnering him at scrumhalf.

Pollard’s tactical kicking, composure and big-match experience could prove particularly important against French opposition.

Stormers and Bulls hit Europe with derby momentum

With Willie le Roux providing additional playmaking experience from the bench, the Bulls have options to control territory and dictate the tempo.

The hosts also possess considerable attacking threats out wide, with Cheswill Jooste and Sebastian de Klerk on the wings and Luan Giliomee starting at fullback.

The set piece will be another major factor in determining the outcome.

Keo stressed that the Bulls must establish themselves as a formidable scrummaging unit following the departure of Wilco Louw.

Their commanding performance against the Lions offered encouraging signs, but Stade Français will provide another opportunity to demonstrate their forward dominance.

The starting front row of Alu Tshakweni, Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Khutha Mchunu will be tasked with laying that foundation.

Keo initially suggested the Bulls should win by as many as 30 points before settling on a margin of approximately 20.

Zels also backed a convincing victory, suggesting a result in the region of 40-25.

For the Bulls, the message is clear: winning at Loftus is essential, but making a statement could be just as important.
