Stormers ready to unleash their European ambitions
The Stormers are determined to turn their impressive early-season form into a serious Investec Champions Cup challenge, starting with Saturday’s clash against Bristol Bears at DHL Stadium.
Fresh from a commanding 39-22 victory over the Sharks, the Cape Town side are brimming with confidence, with their growing squad depth and the influence of their Springbok stars fuelling belief that this could be the season they make their mark in Europe.
Speaking on the Keo & Zels Show, the guys highlighted the team’s strength at tighthead prop as a major advantage in their pursuit of European success.
“I think, aside from the Springboks, the Stormers have the best depth at tighthead prop in the world,” Zels said.
He explained that having reliable scrum options throughout the squad allows the Stormers to rotate players without significantly weakening their set piece.
With Sazi Sandi and Zachary Porthen among those presented with opportunities, the Stormers are expected to make full use of their resources.
Keo also highlighted the team’s growing ambition in the Champions Cup, suggesting that South African franchises are beginning to appreciate the prestige attached to winning Europe’s premier club competition.
For the Stormers, that ambition is reflected in both their squad selections and the attitude of their players.
The Cape side will again wear their black jerseys, continuing the Men in Black tribute to the famous 1999 Stormers team.
Keo noted that the players have embraced the occasion, describing the opportunity to represent the Stormers in Cape Town as a privilege rather than a burden.
Much of the discussion centred on Damian Willemse, whose performance against the Sharks impressed both presenters.
Zels believes Willemse is currently producing some of the best rugby of his career, having grown increasingly comfortable at fullback.
His maturity, leadership and ability to influence matches in attack and defence have made him one of the Stormers’ most important players.
Club captain Ruhan Nel also received considerable praise.
Zels described the outside centre as the glue holding the team together, highlighting his defensive intelligence, work rate and leadership.
Although Nel’s contribution is not always obvious in the statistics, his ability to organise the rush defence and force opposition attacks back inside remains critical.
The men from Cape Town will nevertheless face a dangerous Bristol side.
Zels identified AJ MacGinty’s tactical kicking and Louis Rees-Zammit’s pace and power as significant threats.
He also warned about Bristol’s driving maul, stressing the importance of discipline and preventing the English visitors from establishing attacking lineouts.
The Stormers’ set piece will come under scrutiny after their earlier difficulties against Edinburgh, although the lineout showed significant improvement against the Sharks.
Stormers and Bulls hit Europe with derby momentum
Keo believes those experiences have taught the Stormers not to underestimate European opposition.
While Zels predicted a six-point victory, Keo was more confident, backing Dobbo’s men to win by 15.
Both expect a challenging contest, but the consensus is that the Stormers have the quality and momentum to start their Champions Cup campaign with a victory.
