Brilliant Boshaai restore SA schools 1st XV rugby order

Brilliant Boshaai is what they had to be to beat South African schools rugby form team Stellenberg High. And they were.

Boshaai, Paarl Boys High for English speakers, won 29-7 to inflict just the second defeat on Stellenberg, whose only other loss came by a point to Garsfontein.

Stellenberg, who stunned Grey College, had beaten Paarl Gim and Paul Roos, of the Western Cape and were seeking a historic first Slam against the Winelands Big Three.

A year ago they did the Southern Suburbs Grand Slam in beating Rondebosch Boys High, Wynberg Boys High, Bishops and SACS, but to do the Winelands Slam would have been an extraordinary feat.

Ultimately, they fell well short against Boshaai, who a week earlier had lost in Bloemfontein to Grey College.

Grey College fell to yet another defeat; this time to Affies. It is their fifth defeat of the year and all the ranking platforms have them outside the SA Schools 1st XV Top 5 for the first time in the last 30 years.

The SA Schools 1st XV weekends demand extensive scrutiny in South Africa and abroad.

Who has the Monday bragging rights among old boys?

It will be Boshaai, Affies and within the province in Kwazulu-Natal it will be Maritzburg College and DHS. Westville and Hilton won big in the cross-border matches against KES and Pretoria Boys respectively. Michaelhouse beat St Johns.

Garsfontein had a strong performance against Noordheuwel in the Noordvaal Cup.

Of the Eastern Cape teams, Selborne won but Grey High were soundly beaten in Cape Town by Wynberg Boys High.
