Mitch’s Bulls in great escape
The Blue Bulls escaped the near embarrassment of blowing a 20 point lead to edge Griquas in the latest round of Currie Cup action.
John Mitchell’s Bulls took a 50 point beating a week ago away to the Pumas but defeat never seemed a consideration when they led Griquas 41-21. It also didn’t look likely that Griquas would outscore the Bulls in tries but the visitors from Kimberley won the battle of five pointers by six to five.
The Bulls led 27-21 and were in charge in the opening quarter of the second half, but the last quarter was all about hanging on as Griquas scored three tries to lose 44-42.
Bulls fullback Manie Libbok scored three tries and Marnitz Boshoff, on his return to Loftus, kicked five conversions.
The win was the Bulls third from seven matches.
Scorers:
Blue Bulls
Tries: Rabs Maxwane, Dayan van der Westhuizen, Manie Libbok (3)
Conversions: Marnitz Boshoff (5)
Penalties: Boshoff (2), Tony Jantjies
Griquas
Tries: Ederies Arendse (2), Christiaan Meyer, Wandile Putuma, AJ Coertzen (2)
Conversions: Andre Swarts (3), George Whitehead (3)
